The estate is situated in the Grand Cru village of Cramant, with vineyards spread across the villages of Cramant, Oiry, and Chouilly, all located in the esteemed Côte des Blancs region.
Their wines are predominantly Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes that flourish in the area's chalky soils. Aurélien Suenen, who is at the helm, is a staunch advocate of sustainable and organic farming practices, having achieved organic certification in 2019. He employs cover crops and natural compost, collaborating with soil experts to express the unique qualities of each parcel of land.
The winemaking philosophy at Champagne Suenen centers on minimal intervention, ensuring the terroir is prominently expressed. Fermentation is spontaneous, utilizing natural yeasts, and aging occurs in a variety of vessels such as enamel tanks, neutral oak barrels, and a concrete egg, facilitating micro-oxygenation without imparting strong oak flavors. The wines undergo neither fining nor filtering, and the dosage has transitioned to Extra Brut, which is characterized by low sugar content, enhancing the natural minerality and freshness of the Chardonnay. Additionally, the wines are aged on lees for extended periods, which contributes to their complexity and texture.
It is an Extra Brut (very dry, typically 2-3 g/L dosage) Champagne known for its precision, purity, tension, and elegance. Pronounced minerality, yellow citrus, green apple, and saline/oyster shell qualities, along with notes of brioche and hazelnut from aging.
